Process of Agreeing the Contract |
The initial quotes for the build were more costly than expected and a decision had to be made by the committee. It was agreed that rather than try to raise more funds, savings would be sought to enable the build to go ahead with the funds we already raised. Identifying Savings By working with the architect, quantity surveyor and the contractor the committee managed to find savings on the original cost and building Whitsome Ark will cost under £400,000 (including a contingency fund). Savings of around £10,000 were found through: - providing portakabins as site accommodation and welfare provision for the contracter and workmen
- essential tree felling
- clearing the site of old fencing and accumulated rubbish
Great thanks goes to all those volunteers involved in the work. Some compromises have had to be made on the interior finishes of The Ark but there will still be a community facility fit for purpose for many years ahead. Landscaping The committee are very grateful to Whitsome Enhancement Group for agreeing to take on the landscaping of the grounds around the Ark after completion. Everyone is keen to plant trees to replace those which had to be felled. Running costs The committee is well aware that local people are concerned about the ongoing running costs of the new building so are working with specialist on an environmentally friendly and cost saving heating system which will include solar panel water heating and a ground source heat pump for space heating. Additional grants have been secured specifically for this work. Contract The contract has been awarded to James Swinton and Co Ltd. with a start in early June.
